Morning Docket: 07.07.20

* The Supreme Court has upheld a ban on automated calls to mobile phones. Maybe now I'll stop getting calls about my car's extended warranty... [USA Today] * A lawyer representing accusers of Jeffrey Epstein says that Maxwell will never reveal the full connections between Prince Andrew and Epstein. [New York Post] * The New York Attorney General has ordered a Black Lives Matter organization to stop soliciting donations in the state since the organization did not comply with the proper registrations. [New York Daily News] * A defendant is being granted a new trial because the judge asked the witness too many questions. This is kind of reminiscent of a famous scene from The Verdict. [New York Law Journal] * Charges have been filed against the woman who alleged to authorities that she was in danger from a black birdwatcher in Central Park in May. [BBC] * An attorney, who is now sick with COVID-19, claims a judge ordered her to court even though she told the court her COVID-19 test was pending and she was showing symptoms. [Bakersfield Californian] * Law360 just named its top lawyers under 40. If I had a subscription, I'd be able to see if I made the cut, but I think I already know the answer... [Law360]

* Lawyers for the estate of the helicopter pilot accused in a lawsuit of causing the crash that killed Kobe Bryant and others wants the case removed from Los Angeles. Pretty sure people know who Kobe Bryant is outside of LA... [Yahoo Sports] * Lyft has settled a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice alleging that the ride-sharing service violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. [Tech Crunch] * The Trump Administration is facing a lawsuit for failing to provide COVID-19 relief money to undocumented families. [Buzzfeed News] * A lawyer for alt-right figure Richard Spencer has been allowed to withdraw from representing him in a case involving the 2017 Charlottesville violence. [Yahoo News] * Check out this profile of a top Hollywood lawyer who wheels and deals while walking around 10 miles a day. That's kind of the opposite of the Lincoln Lawyer... [Wall Street Journal]

* Rudy Giuliani is reportedly looking for another defense lawyer.  Guess he listened to the old adage about he who represents himself... [CNN] * Rose McGowan is suing the lawyers Harvey Weinstein enlisted to discredit her, including David Boies.  I'm sure the defendants know a few good attorneys to represent them. [New York Times] * The D.C. Bar just released an ethics opinion on what managers and employees should do if they think a lawyer is impaired. Based on some of the stories on this website, such guidance is sorely needed. [American Lawyer] * A Clarence Thomas documentary is set to be released in 2020.  Guess Justice Thomas wanted his own RBG. [Time] * A lawyer who is suing her former employer must pay the legal fees of her former law firm because she failed to produce critical evidence for 17 months. [New Jersey Law Journal] * A man caught on video punching his own lawyer in court was acquitted of the assault, since the injuries were deemed not serious.  Apparently being injured with a concussion and a broken nose from an assault by a client is just a job hazard for lawyers.
